Whitewood is a small town in South Dakota located in the western part of the state with a population of about one hundred full time residents. In 1972, a Whitewood construction company started a small trucking company called Whitewood Transportation. We operated and grew successfully there, as that young company, until the industry deregulated in 1980.
We believe the success of Whitewood Transportation in South Dakota was due to our focus on providing value to our clients and building client commitment. We started small, mastered the fine points, and kept our focus. Whitewood Transportation grew, and in 1987, three individuals by the name of Doug Miller, Larry Smith and Donald Sand aligned themselves and formed a partnership in Billings, Montana, that then became Whitewood Transport.
In 1991, Mike Wilson brought his experience in the transport industry to Whitewood, and was followed by John Hanson. Both became shareholders. Over the next few years, Don Sand, Larry Smith, and Doug Miller left the company, and Mike and John remain as the company’s current sole shareholders.
Today Whitewood Transport is nationally recognized as the heavy hauler of choice throughout North America, specializing in equipment and commodities of large or unusual weight or dimension. Our consistent focus, providing value to our clients and building client commitment, is now framed in operational efficiency.
